Term Five

Our value for this term is Courage.

Term 5 Overview of Learning

Our enquiry is: What are things made from?

This term we will be learning all about everyday materials and how what they are used for.  We will be answering our mini enquiry questions which are History and Science and DT based, very exciting experiments and experiences  will be taking place this term and in Term 6.

We will be answering What is my toy made of?, How have toys changed over time?, Is this toy from the past or modern day?, What can I do to keep my teddy warm?, What is a designer? and What do I need to make a toy?

Maths

We will continue to build on our understanding of addition and subtraction but expanding our knowledge to include numbers within 20.

English

This term our focus book is The Three Little Pigs where the children will have the opportunities to write both fiction and non-fiction pieces of writing, incorporating prior learning about question marks and exclamation marks.  We will also have a focus on the year 1 common exception words in our handwriting sessions to support our understanding and spellings of these words.

Science

This term our focus in science is all about everyday materials, what things that we find around the home are made from and what their properties are and why they are chosen over other materials.  We will continue to look at seasonal changes and how the seasons effect the plant and animal life.

History

This term we are looking in the history of toys, how they have changed over the years, comparing what toys our parents and grandparents played with and if there are any similarities to toys children play with today.  Mrs Powell has gifted year 1 with some of the toys she played with when she was a little girl, so we can see how toys have changed over time! We will also have a resource box full of lots of different toys, some that are even older than Mrs Powell!

Geography

We will continue to look at the seasons and how they change - linking to science.

Art - over terms 5 and 6

In art we will be exploring the artist Paul Klee and creating our own inspired artwork.

DT - over terms 5 and 6

We will be designing, building and evaluating our own toy cars - focusing on the mechanisms of wheels and axels.

RE

This term we will be looking into the Christian and Hindu religions and learning about why places are special to their religions.

Music

In music, we will be looking at timbre and rhythmic patterns.

PSHE

This term we will be learning about relationships and how they impact us.

Trips and experiences

We are really lucky this term and next term to have some exciting trips and experiences booked for us to explore toys from the past and how everyday materials have changed over the years. Keep an eye out for more information about these.

 

Term Four

Our value this term is Forgiveness.

Term 4 Overview of Learning

Our enquiry is: What is my village like?

This term we will continue our learning about the local area of Berrow, Brean and Burnham-on-Sea.   We will be looking at how the local area has changed over time, exploring photographs from different periods of time and comparing them to photos taken from 'today'.

Maths

This term we will be looking at positional language for example before, after, in the evening, first, next etc.  We will also be looking at time - with a focus on days of the week and month and learning about clocks and telling time to the hour and half hour.  We will also continue to build on the children's knowledge of numbers within 10, focusing on addition and subtraction.

English

This term our book is 'The Secret of Black Rock'.  We will continue to use our understanding of nouns and adjectives and learn all about verbs and how they add to a sentence.  We will be writing a sequel to the story where Erin and Black Rock have to save a sea creature.  We will also be writing a report about the SV Nornen, linking beautifully to our enquiry question.  Throughout the term we will continue to focus on handwriting.  

 

Science

This term we will continue to look at how the seasons change throughout the year.  We will also be looking at one of the mini enquiry questions "How has the weather changed our local area?".  We will be reviewing prior learning about plants and the features of a plant and a tree.

DT

This term the we will be exploring windmills, what they are used for and making and evaluating their own windmills.

PSHE

This term is all about Healthy Me.  We will be looking at how to keep healthy.

RE

This term we are looking at Salvation and diving deeper into the Easter Story, building on what we have learnt in reception.

Computing

This term we will be looking at programming, and using Bee-Bots.

Forest School

Forest school is every Monday.  Children need to bring in Wellington boots or an old pair of shoes (named) that they do not mind getting 'very' muddy.  We are very lucky that we now have a school supply of all-in-one waterproofs that the children can wear to protect their clothing.

PE

PE is every Monday and Thursday.  Please can PE kits be bought into school in a bag.  PE kit needs to be named as children will get changed in class.  

 

 

Term Three

Our value this term is Trust.

Term 3 Overview of Learning

Our enquiry is: What is my village like?

This term we will be learning all about the local area of Berrow, Brean and Burnham-on-Sea.  We will be looking at maps, finding where we live, learning how to recognise human and physical geographical features and then creating our own maps.  We will be looking at how the local area has changed over time, exploring photographs from different periods of time and comparing them to photos taken from 'today'.

Maths

This term there is a real focus on numbers within 10.  We will be building on the children's knowledge of numbers to 5 and use the skills learnt in Term 1 and 2 and put these skills into practice when learning all about numbers to 10.  We will also focus on addition and subtraction.

English

This term our book is 'The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch'.  We will continue to use our understanding of nouns and adjectives and learn all about verbs and how they add to a sentence.  We will be re-telling the story of Mr Grinling and the 'pesky' seagulls.  Throughout the term we will continue to focus on handwriting.  

This term we have introduced spellings, each week a new set of words will be sent home to practice, (we will also be practising these in school during morning retrieval sessions) these consist of the year 1 common exception words.  There will be an opportunity at the end of each week for the children to demonstrate their learning.  

Science

This term we will continue to look at how the seasons change throughout the year.  We will also be looking at one of the mini enquiry questions "How has the weather changed our local area?".  We will be reviewing prior learning about plants and the features of a plant and a tree.

Art

Our focus artists this term are Marc Chigall and Pierre-Auguste Renior.  We will be using St Anne's Church as our inspiration, learning how different tools create a different effect with the aim to create our own take on a stained glass window.

PSHE

This term is all about Dreams and Goals, how we can celebrate our successes.

RE

How should we live our lives? Linking both Jewish and Christian beliefs and understandings.

Music

This term we will be learning all about rhythm, how to keep rhythm, how to create rhythm and why it is an essential part of music.

Term 2 Overview of Learning

Our enquiry is: What is around me?

This is an exciting and engaging enquiry question set to explore what the children can see around them. 

Our mini enquiry questions:

What can I see outside my window?

What grows near me?

Where am I?

What is the weather?

What is a living thing?

What am I?

Are all animals the same? 

Each lesson will comprise of different activities for the children to take part in, to build their vocabulary and understanding on the world around them.

Maths

Throughout the term we will be revisiting prior learning and skills and building on these to develop confidence in number recognition and formation.  We will be working on gaining a confident understanding of bonds to 10 and beyond.  We will also be learning about 2D and 3D shapes and how they can be manipulated to create new shapes.

English Writing

In English we will be working on building stamina in writing, focusing on letter formation and using phonics to support spelling.  We will be using different high-quality texts to support writing.  

Science

Our science topic for these next two terms will be Plants and their structures and Animals including humans.  We will be planting our own seeds to see how they grow throughout the term.  We will be investigating different plants and using our observational skills.  

We will also be observing how the seasons change throughout the year, using the large tree on the playground, to observe it's leaves and how it changes as the seasons change.

The children will be making their own weather stations, they will record their results and compare their results with others.

DT

This term we will be looking into fruits and vegetables, what the differences are and how you can tell.  We will be cutting, juicing and tasting the fruits and then designing our own fruit smoothies.

P.E

P.E is on a Monday and Thursday. Children should bring their PE kits in a bag. PE kits should be black shorts, trousers or skorts, a white Berrow logo t-shirt or plain white t-shirt and black or white trainers.

Forest School

Forest school is on a Monday afternoon.  Children should bring their forest school clothes in a named bag please.

Term 1 Overview of Learning

Our enquiry is: What is around me?

This is an exciting and engaging enquiry question set to explore what the children can see around them.

Computing

In computing, we will be looking at systems and networks, learning how to log onto the computer and to use the mouse to draw.  We will also be looking at where else we can find technology, beyond the school.  

PSHE

This term’s unit is ‘Being me in my world’. First we will be looking at what makes us feel safe, both in school and the wider community.  We will build on this to how we can take responsibility for our actions and what consequences mean.  We will focus on what makes us proud and how we can have a positive impact in our school and community.
